      Hi there. The older belt-drives have more cooling power than modern units. This particular M5-2 runs about 15% of the time. The float-controlled refrigerant systems are extremely efficient from a thermodynamic standpoint. This is a 1/4 HP system cooling an apartment size cabinet, as well. A 1/4 HP compressor in today's world would be adequate for a very high-end side by side full size fridge. This one is about 1/3 the size of that. So it has a very low duty cycle.

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet 5 днів тому

      Hi there. I would hesitate to use these for longterm storage of air since they have no protection from corrosion inside. Reuse for dry reclaimed refrigerant, or every now and then for a portable air tank seems safe to me; but your mileage could vary. As far as adapting to an air system, the port on these tanks is 1/4" SAE Flare. You would need a 1/4" SAE flare female adapter to get to whatever size your system used.

    Wow, museum worthy, Its funny i think of ways we could improve design of things like refrigerators/ac systems/cars/equipment etc, But then i learn to find out they did it that way a hundred years ago! Its been technological devolution ever since, the abusive spending consumer and the overwhelmed repair industry (and me). You seem to get them going just exactly like they should. You know, you should in theory be able to order vacuum insulated panels and install that technology on the older generally nicer machines. VIP technolyogy should be very cheap and plentiful by now. The energy savings is there in the insulation. Dam coolers make vip insulated coolers for a fair price, Im still trying to find a supplier...

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet 11 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment! You are correct about the devolution of quality in the more recent years. It is pervasive and sickening. The belt-drive machines were never maintenance-free and require upkeep and overhaul throughout their lives. That is where they fall short in today's world. The next generation after the belt-drive ere were more or less maintenance free, yet still had a multi-decade design life. That era is pretty well the pinnacle of refrigeration in my opinion. I can't count how many 80 year old GE Monitor Top fridges which still work after only minor repairs to deteriorated wiring. I have heard about vacuum panel insulation and certainly need to investigate that form of insulation. The M5-2 has extruded polystyrene foam board insulation which is pretty good, but nothing like vacuum panels. At this time I have not found a supplier willing to work with me on the vacuum panels.

      General Electric engineered a new compressor and sold it starting in 1945 just after the War. The earlier model was a scotch yoke machine. This one was engineered for SO2. It was designed for non-miscible oil and refrigerant. When Freon-12 was introduced, GE actually did try this refrigerant in the scotch yoke machines. They had noise complaints due to oil dilution, and thus continued using SO2 in the scotch yoke machines until the end of production during the War. The two machines are easy to tell apart. The 1935-1942 scotch yoke machines have a vertical motor shaft axis. The electrical pass-through terminals are on the bottom. The motor suspension springs are inside the pressure vessel. The external size of the pressure vessel is around 300mm. These have paper and cotton motor winding insulation. They are SO2 units. Monitor Top CK and Flat Top CF fridges are examples. The "post-war" 1945 and newer models have a horizontal motor shaft axis. The electrical terminals are mounted on the end of the pressure vessel. The suspension springs are on the outside of the casing, so the whole compressor is floating on springs. The size of the pressure vessel is much smaller than the older models, maybe only 2/3 as large. This model had a different oil pump and oil specification. It also had enameled magnet wire motor winding. It was always used with Freon-12. The Monitor Top FEA model and many later fridges into the 50's used this compressor.

    What do you say about a R290/R600 mix as a R134a replacement?

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet 11 днів тому

      I am not a fan of any blends. They tend to separate and the differing components leak at different rates. Also going from an HFC like R134A to a hydrocarbon is going to be dicey. Auto A/C R134A systems have rubber parts in them which are designed to resist PAG oil and HFC refrigerants. Using hydrocarbons in them is likely going to result in leaks or swelling of parts.

I have a feeling it was probably a mixture of POE and mineral oil. There was too much oil in the system, leading me to believe it had a double charge.
